This might be a longshot, but...
I've had 3 pairs of Apple earbuds that have broken, busted, burned, whatever term you'd like to use, from an unknown reason. The easy fix was of course to call Apple, and have them send you a new pair.
The symptom of the earbud problem is a distorted sound, much like aluminium wiggling and crackling inside the earbud instead of a clean bass sound. If the music that you listen to doesn't have much bass, it will seem as though the volume is lesser in the affected earbud.
Well, how does this happen? Most often, it's due to the driver inside the earbud that changed shape due to pressure change - if you jam that earbud in quite tightly (without the foam to isolate) you can actually do that; you'll hear a sharp clicking sound as the driver crackles out of shape. Same thing if you have it vibrate too loudly with deafning bass.
The solution? If you have the foam protector on, remove it. Then stick the earbud between your lips, the grille facing the inside of your mouth, and start suucking some air through the earbud! Plug the earbuds back in the iPod, listen to a bass-heavy track, and see if it does the trick. If not, try again!
I've tried it on two "dead" Apple earbuds, and everything is back to normal, sounding great!!!
This is probably the silliest trick you'll ever read in your entire lifetime, and I doubt AppleCare will ask people to suuck their earbud to give it a new life instead of sending them out by the hundreds since it's under warranty, but it is definitely worth a shot!
Let me know how this trick works for you, and do let iPod websites know about this tip !!!

OMg...he is right! lol. AHAHAH. How did you EVER come up with this solution?
Gross, But it works!
There is a ray of hope for those who want these headphones in white - EBAY! They go about the same quoted prices mentioned above - however - you can have your headphones match your ipod - without losing the sound from those horrific ipod headphones. I bought them when I got my ipod - and they're a dream. And cleaning isn't difficult either. Just pop them out and a lil soap and water does the trick. Just be careful not to wash them down the drain.
